As per Wikipedia

A folding bicycle is a bicycle designed to fold into a compact form, facilitating transport and storage. When folded, the bikes can be more easily carried into buildings, on public transportation (facilitating mixed-mode commuting and bicycle commuting), and more easily stored in compact living quarters or aboard a car, boat or plane

Folding bikes are one one of the best and all time favorite bikes in the cycling world. The advancement and popularity of bikes are growing as time going on then not to talk about its future.

This is and will be the solution for the issues of the commuters who have a busy day and no time to ride. Reaching the destination on time with it is the joyful journey. No waste of the time even you get stuck in crowd traffic. Every ride would be fast and furious and easy.

Truly, folding bikes are the great invention ever made.

In general, folding bikes when folded looks:

4-different-folded- bkies

But when unfolded looks similar to non-foldable.

Feature

The features are far better than ordinary bikes. Folders are far easier than regular bikes. It has the excellent and efficient mechanism, attractive wider framework (design) and good looking.

The Most benefited feature is lightweight. However, has smaller size and wheel than the regular bike.

A folding bicycle is the versatile and handy cycle and can be folded compact form to saves space, time and energy. If folded, we can carry on the road, put on the car, buildings or plane, on public transportation, put inside the car, or you can hide it anywhere you want. Even you leave outside, no chance of being stolen.

Also, it facilitates the commuters with the mixed mode commuting and bicycle commuting. It is durable and can be easily stored in car, bus, boat everywhere.

Common Features

  1. Light Weight
  2. Mobile
  3. Speed
  4. Great Design
  5. Durable Frame

Mechanism

Folding bikes has the different system than normal bikes. Its mechanism offers with the many great features like folding speed, folding ease, compactness, ride, weight, durability, and price. The mechanism may vary even within same brand but different model. Their folding systems can be as:

  1. Half- or Mid-fold
  2. Vertical Fold
  3. Triangle Hinge
  4. Magnetic Fold and Suspension System
  5. Break Aways and Other Styles

What About Size?

There are different size of bikes available in the market. However, in general, folding bikes size is smaller than non-foldable bikes, but the parts like handlebars and seat posts are highly adjustable. Its by four times more.

Folders are mostly sized smaller as 16″ to 20″ wheels with adjustable and flexible parts but many folding bikes manufacturers like Dahon, Montague, Tern Bicycles etc. produces full sized bikes with about 26″ of wheels.

The smaller folding bikes looks better but seem unadjustable and uncomfortable for tall guys.

Whom Is It For?

Firstly, To be honest, folding bikes do not discriminate anyone. Anyone can own and ride it, and that is up to the owner. This types of bikes are mostly for commuters and travelers or the one who is busy guys who have don’t have time to stay on traffic but have 15 seconds of time to fold.

Secondly, this type of bikes is for the rider who wants to save space.

Advantages and Disadvantages

I am not certain about pros and cons about folding bikes as they may vary from one to another. You may find one benefit in one model which is not same in other model and even in entire series.

Folders mostly come with advantages than disadvantages. I have talked about it here. Simply its somewhat like:

Pros

Cons

      Affordable and economical

Expensive than conventional bikes

Easy to use

Small wheel (not in all but most)

Thief-proof

Heavier & smaller

Good looking & professional

Not for tall & heavy guys

Convenient

Not very strong

Saves space

Spend more money to repair

So, Should I Buy?

Oh! Sure, Why not?

But I am not the one who makes your decision that you should buy it or not. That all depends on you and only you, not others. Who knows what kind of bike you want. You may not like the folding bike, or you want to buy non-folding one.

In my opinion, you should try and experience it then you will get about it. Even you don’t know you may like it.

Just think about that the time is Valentine Day when you are on the road with crowd traffic and you are with your unfoldable bike, and your valentine is waiting for you. Then think what will happen if you will be late?

However, before buying search it over the internet and different shops that what you want and decide and buy.

Which brand is best for me, you and everyone?

Oh my god! This one is a tough question.

To be honest, there are not any bikes that don’t suit you.

There are many brands or producer of the folding bike. But for me, Dahon is the best producer when the matter is about folding bikes. Why? Its simply because Dahon is best. Just look at their great products like MU Uno, Speed Uno, Mariner D7 etc..etc. They are not just best bikes, they are great, excellent bikes and ruling in the market.

Also, there are other great brands like:

Tern, Allen, Brompton, Retrospec, Montague, Hasa, Best Choice Products, Schwinn, Stowabike, Columba, etc., etc..

These brand names come first (mostly Dahon) in the folding bike industry.

However, they are good at their own way. The features of their products differ from each other and definitely your experience will not be same.

Research the reviews on the internet you will find less negative reviews.

What model Should I Choose?

Can’t say what type/model you like. There are different models. Just make the final decision and be a bit tricky to figure out which bike best suit you or you can buy and how you are gonna utilize it. You can use it as the primary mode of transportation or secondary.

Which One Should I Choose?

This is completely no brainer question, who knows what you want. Just research and make the final decision and buy. Look for what you are looking for.

“All those are best are not expensive, and all expensive things are not best.”

What are the best folding bikes?

Best are that good looking (externally not internally) or one that your best friend suggests, right?

Its wrong, best folding bikes are those bikes which have best features that make us easy and satisfy and pays off what you spend for it. If you buy non-folder and that satisfies you, then it will be far better than folders.

Best folding bikes may be good looking along with remarkable features like strength, durability, speed and many other internal and external factors including your satisfaction.

For me, almost all folding bikes are best as per my experience. However, there are some of the bikes I highly like and suggest you. Those are extremely best for me:

Retrospec Speck SS is another excellent foldable bike which has been one of the best sellers. However, this is not by Dahon; it is the product of Retrospec itself.

Again it is another good choice for the urban riders and commuters.

The design is simple and modernized with 20 inches of wheels as Dahon Speed Uno, but the features, function and experience are not gonna be same.

The frame is made up of hand-built aluminum which makes its weight light as around 20lbs (10 kgs) which are what you want but breaks easily which is a huge drawback. , ,

10. Strida SX

STRiDA-SX-review

Among all the bikes in the market, Strida SX is uniquely designed folding bike but looks weird. It has the distinctive triangular shaped design.

The best thing about this bike is it is small bike and easy to fold within 10 seconds. These bikes occupy lower space.

The wheel is small, 18 inches which are bigger than rest of their other models of bikes (16 inches) but still smaller than other bikes which are
20 inches. As you also know that smaller is slower and less stable too. However, this bike is not too hard to accelerate.

Cons

11. Dahon Boardwalk

dahon-broadwalk-review

Again this big giant foldable cycle producer has another perfectly excellent cycle, Dahon Boardwalk. This is the most affordable bike of Dahon as most of the bikes cost more as $300, $400 and even more which was not affordable for most of the people.

The design is clean and impressive and good looking.

Like most of Dahon bikes rear rack, mudguards and uses the HiTensil frame ( which is not high quality), and it is bit heavier (12.5 kg) bit heavier. However, the frame tube is thin and not high-quality metal.

Boardwalk is mainly for urban commuters who just need a simple bike for short commutes.

Dahon Mu P8 is again another most versatile and sophisticated bike.

This bike is next improved version of Mu Uno but with multiple gears keeping frame and forks identical. The shape and design are as well same.

The difference is that it is more functional and lighter but heavier than MU Uno (11 kg) and bigger. But it is more compact in folded state than other folding bikes.

15. Columba SP26S

columba-SP26S-review

Generally, the price of the 26-inch full-size bike is expensive but you will not find this Columba SP26S expensive as no other 26-inch full-size bike are cheap as this bike is.

The frame of this bike is steel and it is strong and heavy of course as it weights 15.5 kg.

This is good for those who has separated less budget to buy the full-size folding bike and for those who are changing their regular bike to foldable.

The only issue with this bike is it is heavier to carry and looks uncomfortable when folded which is even find on expensive one.

All I can say is although this bike has some limitations, the price is unbeatably cheaper than other bigger bike.

Now I am sure that questions are poping up in your mind and that question must be like which folding bike should I buy? or else which Dahon bike should I buy? right?

What to look for when buying a folding bike? (Buying Guide)

So It is sure that you are buying the cycle of your choice, right? However, sometimes the bike you choose may not satisfy you later on future when the new model with new feature rolls out. You may not like the outdated performance of your old bike.

So, let’s have a look at some of the important things to look when buying folding bikes:

1. Size Before and After Folding It

Just Look for the size of the bike in folded and non-folded condition. Pick the bike of the size suitable for you.

2. Weight (Light or Heavy)

What should the bike weight for you? Light or heavy?
In my opinion, the more lightweight, the better. You can carry it effortlessly.

By the way, the parts like fenders/mudguards, frame size and type etc also makes difference in its size.

3. Wheel Size

What must be the size of the wheel for you to ride?
The small sized wheel has a better look but bit difficult to ride. It’s bumpy. The Larger one can be easy to ride and faster too.

4. Frame Material

Check out the materials used in framing. See what its made up of. Is it of aluminum or carbon fiber or steel or titanium. This can matter in weight of your bike. In my opinion, you should look for aluminum. Simply because of its lightweight.

  • Carbon- Expensive and easily breakable
  • Steel: Expensive, Strong and Heavyweight
  • Titanium: Unaffordable and Weigh More but are Very Durable

5. Mechanism

This is what you mainly look for. See the bike that what type of mechanism it has: Split Fold/ Triangular Hinge/ Break Away mechanism.

6. Gears

You may get stocked whether to buy geared or non-geared model. I will suggest geared one. It can be accelerated quickly, easy to ride on the hill and can be the ride at high speed.

7. Price

This is what you primarily look for. You buy it if it is cheap. If not cheap you will not buy. Don’t just look for cheap; you will not own for a long time.

Just don’t look for:

  1. Cheap and Used/secondhand (Most of them are repaired.)
  2. Color and design
  3. Bike with fewer features
  4. Heavy
